l OPERATIONS NARRATIVE Cooper Nuclear Station September 1983 I

The 1983 Refueling and Maintenance Outage ended on September 1, 1983 at 2140 with the Beginning of Cycle (BOC) 9 first reactor criticality. Cycle 9 is scheduled to run to October 1, 1984. On September 2, 1983, during attempts to synchronize the turbine to the grid, a turbine overspeed trip occurred resulting in a reactor scram. Some wiring problems and a bad circuit card were found in'the turbine control system and replaced. The reactor was returned to operation that same day and the generator was first synchronized to the grid at 2201, September 3, 1983. Various BOC 9 startup testing was performed and will continue until 100% power is achieved. The BOC turbine

- trip testing was performed on September 4, 1983, which required tripping the turbine and generator off line for approximately 1.5 hours5.787037e-5 days
0.00139 hours
8.267196e-6 weeks
1.9025e-6 months
.

On September 12, 1983 at 1632, a failure of Motor Control Center (MCC) "A" resulted in a turbine trip and a reactor scram.- The control center was repaired and the plant was returned to operation on September 14, 1983.

On September 17, 1983, the reactor was manually scrammed to begin a short maintenance outnge. A HPCI vacuum breaker (HPCI to torus) was discovered leaking during surveillance testing earlier during the week and required a shut down of the plant to repair. The problem vacuum breaker was removed and blanked off. Redundant vacuum breakers in the system allow normal system

-operation with this valve removed. The valve will be repaired and installed at the next extended outage. The plant returned to operation on September 18, 1983.

The plant continued with normal operation the remainder of the month. Full power operation was achieved on September 26, 1983 for the first time for Cycle 9.
