Dear Mr. Denton:
By letter dated November 18, 1983, Duke Power Company requested an exemption to Section III. J. of Appendix R to 10 CER 50.
This letter requested an exemption for McGuire Nuclear Station from the requirement to provide eight hour battery powered emergency lights in the Standby Shutdown Facility and along that portion of the access route between the Standby Shutdown Facility and the Turbine Building (i.e. the yard area).
The NRC Staff has reviewed this request and, in principle, concurs. However, in dis.:ussion with NRC staff members, they have indicated a need for Ldditional assurance that a backup means of providing illumination for these areas will be available. To provide them additional assurance, Duke Power Company will place battery-powered hand lanterns in the Control Room to be used in emergency situations by the plant operators. This has been discussed with the NRC Staff and it is our understanding that this is acceptable.
