Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 10 CFR 50.55(e) 30 Day Report Duct Fitting Fabrication NRC Docket Nos. 50-456/457 Oear Mr. Keppler:
On July 1, 1983, the Commonwealth Edison Company Project Construction Department nttified Mr. Julian M. Hinds of your office of a deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding the fabrication of duct fittings without approved design documents at our Braidwood Station.
For your tracking purposes, this deficiency was assigned Number 83-08.
This letter fulfills the thirty (30) day reporting requirements of 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding this matter and is considered to be an interim report because sufficient information is not available at this time to provide a definitive report.
DESCRIPTION OF DEFICIENCY Duct fittings such as Y-branches, nested elbows, and square to rounds were fabricated without Sargent & Lundy approved design documents or vendor documents.
STATUS OF CORRECTIVE ACTION Pullman Sheet Metal is working on a revision to their Duct Brochure which will identify the construction details for the various duct fittings.
The revised Duct Brochure is expected to be submitted to Sargent & Lundy by August 8, 1983.
In the interim, duct fittings are being detailed on FCR's and approval is required prior to installation of the fitting.
This interim practice is being followed on a limited basis in order to progress with our current construction schedule.

i 1 Upon review and approval of the revised Duct Brochure, an inspection schedule will be established.
Additionally, if required, a repair / rework schedule will be developed.
Based on the schedule for submittal of the revised Duct Brochure to our Consulting Engineers stated above, we expect to be in a position to provide a status update by October 1, 1983.
