Interrocatory No. 2 Das any stainless steel piping used, or to be used at Limerick's boiling water reactor, manufactured by the same manufacturer as supplied to the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant?

Answer Applicant has been unable to determine the manufacturer of o

stainless steel pipe used at Vermont Yankee. Intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) is related to the type of stainless steel used and the service in which that stainless steel is used.

There has been no correlation cade between IGSCC and specific pipe manufacturers.

o Interrogatory No._3 Whether or not fron the sane nanuf acturer, would such piping be equally susceptable to intergranular stress corrosion as occurred at Yermont Yankee?

Answer No.

The type of stainless steel that has been af fected by intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) in operating BWR's is high carbon content type 304 and in some cases high carbon content type 316.

The entire recirculation system and essentially all of the IGSCC susceptible portions of the other prasary pressura boundary piping at Limerick have been replaced with IGSCC resistant low carbon content stainless steel.

o Interrocatory No. 4 Provide (rccarde) Quality Accuranco Rccords of heat-affseted zones of welds made on all safety-related stainless steel piping to insure that Limerick atainless steel does not have the same intergranular stress corrosion or other adverse effect.

Answer i

The responsible design organization specifies or approves stainless steel materials, f abrication and installation procedures and applications to prevent IGSCC.

Quality Assurance records provide documented verification that welding on safety-related stainless steel materials are performed in accordance with these engineering requirements.

In as auch as IGSCC develops during operation, non-destructive testing at the construction phase would not indicate the presence of IGSCC.

Quality. Assurance logs, including those for Quality Control Inspection Records of safety-related piping installations, were previously provided.

used in checking possibility of stainless steel piping defects from welding or otherwise?

Answer Stainless steel piping welds and adjacent base metal are examined as required by the governing engineering specification which is based upon the applicable code.

Examination test I

methods used as applicable are:

Liquid Penetrant Examinations, Ultrasonic Examinations, Radiography, and Visual Examinations.
