HATCH DOCKET NUMBER 50-366 Tech. Specs. section(s) which requires report:

Unit 1 Tech. Specs. section 3.1.13.3, ACTION b and Unit 2 Tech. Specs, section 3.7.6.2, ACTION a, required this report due to spray / sprinkler systems for Unit 1 East Cableway and Unit 2 East Cableway not being restored to operable status within 14 days.

Plant conditions at the time of the event (s)-

On. January 25, 1983,. Unit 2 was in steady state operation at 1714 MWt (approximately 70% power)

On March 14, 1983, Unit I was in the run mode, increasing reactor power on a ramp from 1825 MWt (approximately 75% power) to 2082 MWt (approximately 85% power)

Detailed description of the event (s)-

1.

On January 25, 1983:

Unit 2's East Cableway spray / sprinkler system was taken out of service for the performance of modifications on it.

2.

On March 14, 1983:

Unit l's East Cableway spray / sprinkler system was taken out of service for the performance of modifications on it.

Consequences of the eventJs):

Within I

hour of each of the event's (fire zones) event

dates, continuous fire watches were assigned to appropriate areas of the i

plant to inspect the inoperable zones as required per Unit 1 Tech.

Specs, section 3.13.3, ACTION a

and Unit 2 Tech.

Specs, section i

3.7.6.2, ACTION a.

The fire watches remained in effect until affected inoperable zones were returned to operable status.

The health and safety of the public were not affected by these non-repetitive events.

Cause(s) of the event (s)-

1.

The Unit 2 East Cableway spray / sprinkler systom was modified to l

provide protection for an area of the Unit 2 East Cableway that i

I was previously protected by an extension of the Unit 1

l spray / sprinkler system.

2.

The Unit 1 East Cableway spray / sprinkler system was modified to replace non-seismic hangers with seismic

hangers, move 13 sprinkler
heads, and remove the extension of spray / sprinkler system providing coverage in Unit 2 East Cableway.

The sprinkler heads were moved to provide better spray coverage for affected areas under protection.

The Unit 2 East Cableway spray / sprinkler system was returned to operable status on April 1,

1983.

2.

The Unit 1 East Cableway spray / sprinkler system was returned to operable status on March 30, 1983.
