. 3.0 THE MIDLAND COOLING POND MATHEMATICAL MODEL.

Mathematical analyses for the cooling pond thermal performance studies employ the energy balance technique (refer to Figure 3). In the most basic form, this technique balances the heat rejected to the pond by the plant with the net surface heat loss from the pond. This net surface heat loss can be mathematically represented by the following fundamental relationship:

6=K (Ts - E) where D is the net surface heat exchange rate per unit area; K is the surface heat exchange coefficient; Ts is the surface temperature of the pond; and E is the equilibrium temperature which varies with the meteorological conditions.

The net surface heat transfer rate, 9, will vary over the areal extent of the pond. When summed over the entire pond surface, the total net surface heat loss will be equal to the plant heat load since the pond is conservatively treated as a closed system in this model.
