Southern California Edison-Company's Response to Generic Lettar 89-19 Regarding Safety Implications of Control Systems in_ LWR Nuclear Power Plants This letter documents a revision to the schedule for installing a-Steam Generator Overf111 Protection System (SGOPS) at San Onofre Unit 3.

By reference 1, in response to Generic Letter 89-19 and reference 2, Southern California Edison (SCE) committed to install 1 a SGOPS during the San Onofre Unit-3 Cycle 6 and Unit 2.

Cycle 7 refueling outages.

However, it is our understanding-that.

the:NRC is still evaluating the safety benefits of installing the SGOPS-in some Combustion Engineering plants.

Based on the status of this NRC evaluation, and-in accordance with the provisions of the Integrated Implementation Schedule, SCE requested a schedule change for Unit 3 in a June-20, 1991 telephone conversation with our NRC Project Manager.

It was agreed that installation of SGOPS at San Onofre Unit 3 shall be deferred to the Cycle 7 refueling outage.
