Dear Mr. Gagliardo:
Post Accident Sampling System (PASS)
The above references identified a completion date for the instal-lation and operation of the PASS for the Fort Calhoun Station of September 30, 1983, with the exception of the ion chromatograph which was scheduled for operation by October 30, 1983.
The pur-pose of this letter is to provide an update regarding the current status of the PASS for the Fort Calhoun Station.
Significant progress has been made toward installation, startup, and testing of the PASS for the Fort Calhoun Station.
To date, the system, with the exception of the ion chromatograph, has been installed and checked through the various sequences for the normal and accident modes of operation.
All pumps, piping, valves, and controllers have been demonstrated to be operable.
Training neces-sary for these personnel to obtain samples in accordance with satoling procedure OI-SL-2 has been completed for all of the shift chemists.
The District plans to train additional shift personnel regarding the operation of this system.
The following is a status report on the six functional areas for the system and discusses unresolved problems associated with the analytical equipment for the PASS.

Containment Atmosphere Sampling - The capability presently exists to obtain a grab sample.
A small modification to the sample chamber is still required before the sample can be extracted and analyzed in the laboratory.
(2)
Containment Atmospheric Isotopic sampling - The germanium detector associated with this function requirec recali-bration.
The acquisition of new sources is required and they are being obtained.
It is anticipated that the Di-strict will receive delivery of these sources in approxi-mately two weeks and approximately one week will be required for calibration.
The gross gamma detector associated with this function is operable.
(3) pH Cell - The District is continuing to check the operation of this cell.
The pH cell checks out well in the shop, but continues to exhibit erratic behavior when connected to the system.
(4)
Reactor Coolant System High Pressure Undiluted Sample - The capability presently exists to obtain a high pressure un-diluted sample.
After obtaining, the sample is transferred to a container for offsite analysis.
(5)
Reactor Coolant System Dissolved Gas Sample - Capability presently exists to determine reactor coolant system gas volume.
In spite of the District's substantial efforts over the past few weeks, the ion chromatograph is still inoper-able.
The District has identified what appears to be a generic problem with the ion chromatograph unit regarding the capability to determine chloride and boron concen-trations in the reactor coolant system when cessium is also present in a coolant.
We are continuing our efforts to re-solve this problem.
However, we are unable to provide any indication as to the time when this problem will be re-solved.
(6)
Reactor Coolant System Liquid Isotopic Analysis - The germanium detector for this function is faulty and has been replaced.
The detector will require calibration once new sources are received.
It is anticipated that the new unit will be installed and calibrated in approximately cne month.

Gagliardo LIC-83-259 Page Three The above referenced items were discussed with Mr.
E. G.
Tourigny (NRR) and Mr. W.
D. Johnson (I&E) on October 3, 1983.
The Dis-trict continues to devote a considerable amount of resources toward the checkout of the PASS.
Every reasonable effort is being made to bring this unit on line as soon as possible.
Your office will be informed when the District has completed this checkout and declared the system operable.
