Neca. man opumarrown October 19, 1983 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No. 597 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation N0/LAJ/JHL:acm Attn:

Mr. James R. Miller, Chief Docket No. 50-339 Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 License No. NPF-7 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Cormission Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:

VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT NO. 2 STATUS OF LICENSE CONDITION 2.C(4)(c)

In your letcer dated June 15, 1983, you requested additional information related to the status of vendor repair or redesign or provisions for obtaining other qualified Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD's) and a proposed schedule for installing qualified RTD's in the North Anna Unit 2 Reactor Coolant System (RCS).

As a result of the further investigations conducted, the previous problems identified with the Weed Instrument Company RTD's during the replacement work conducted at the refueling outage appear to be best identified as anomalies in the results of pre-installation field testing of the devices. These ancmalies have since been resolved betvgen Vepco and the manufacturer. New unit sets of RTD's are being manufactured by Weed Instrument Company with improvements that minimize the potential for recurrence of the anomalous responses previously noted.

In addition, Vepco Station Maintenance personnel will observe testing and receive field installation training at the manufacturer's facility.

Specific devices have been modified in design to accomodate unique physical interference problems identified during the refueling outage.

It ~ is Vepco's current intention to install the Weed Instrument Company RTD's during the forthcoming refueling outages tentatively scheduled for June, 1984 (Unit 1) and for October, 1984 (Unit 2).

Vepco has completed an examination of prototypes of the new RTD's and find them to be satisfactory for their intended use.
