SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Virgil C.

Summer Nuclear Station, Unit No. 1, continued operation at power levels up to 100% power during August 1983.

On August 11, 1983, at 1009 hours0.0117 days
0.28 hours
0.00167 weeks
3.839245e-4 months
, the reactor tripped from 100%

power due to a turbine trip on high bearing vibration.

Apparent

)

cause was a spurious signal.

On August 12, 1983, at 0253 hours0.00293 days
0.0703 hours
4.183201e-4 weeks
9.62665e-5 months
, a rapid cooldown from 557*F to 537*F occurred while the reactor was in hot standby.

A Main Steam Isolation Valve was closed terminating cooldown.

The cause was a broken yoke on the actuator of a steam dump valve.

Primary pressure decreased to approximately 2050 psi.

On August 13,198 3, at 0214 hours0.00248 days
0.0594 hours
3.53836e-4 weeks
8.1427e-5 months
, the reactor tripped from 34%

power due to a turbine trip caused by failure of an O-ring in the "A" Master Trip Solenoid.

On August 17, 1983, at 1407 hours0.0163 days
0.391 hours
0.00233 weeks
5.353635e-4 months
, the reactor tripped from 100%

power due to a generator / turbine trip.

The cause of the event was an inadvertent opening of a generator potential compartment resulting in an unbalance in the "B"

phase.

On August 31, 1983, operation was continuing at approximately 100% power.
