E. SKUCHAS locate Reading As part of the evaluation to cietermine. the feasibility of ultrasonic

~ At this time testing of the DH-V-1 I spoke with Walworth Valve Company.

'Walworth has little experience in U.T. exo, ination and v.ere not able to provide any guidance.

They did, however, agree to allow us access to

' valves under production in their shop to evaluate any U-T procedure we might establ.ish.

Additionally, I spoke with Bill Moorey 'at.L'P&L.

At this time he is establishing a procedure to ultrasonically ex* amine butt welds between 1-1/2

1-5/8" thick cast' 316 SS (CF8M) safe ends and Cast' 316 SS valves.

Bill's

. work will be invaluable 'in terms of oui examination procedtire.

Spokefwith,.iay Potter at TMI.

He informed me that Con' Am, who' turrently-

' performs TEE's U.T. examinations, does 'nc.t possess the expertise or experience at this time to examine the DH-V-1.

Jay does believe, however, that C6a Am '

is interested in this type of examination and will be develop; tug their i.-

expertise -in inspecting cast' stainless steel.

_s Even though' the expertise does not exist at this time to pe'rform the -

U.T. examination of the DH-V-1,'I still urge Met-Ed to continue to pursue this avenue espec, ially if it is the intention to allow DH-V-1 to operate until 1985.

Certain operating information which has come to light such as, this valve sees temperatures as high as IS.Q*J when the decay heat system is functioning and that the noraal pH ran;;e in this system is 5.95 to 7.2 tend to further complicate the analysis and thus decrease the confidence level.

This added information, hewever, does not affect my initial response, but only strengthens the need to develop a non-destructive examination

, procedure..
