UNIT: McGuire 2 DATE: 8/15/91 )

I NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

MONTH: July 1991 )

McGuire Unit' 2 began the month of July operating at 100% full power.

The unit operated at or near 100% full power until 2030 on 07/12, when a power reduction was begun for nuclear instrumentation (NIS) calibration. The unit reached 95% power at 2113 on 07/12. At 0130 on 07/13, with one channel of NIS calibrated, indicated quadrant power  ;

tilt ratio was out of specification, and a load reduction was l commenced. At 0340 on 07/13, the operators noticed control bank 'D' l groups '1' and '2' control rods were nisalignad, and began boration to realign. The unit was holding at 91% power at 0402 on 07/13. The bank l

'D' rods were unmovable, but trippable. An axial flux difference (AFD) swing was in progress. At 0658 on 07/14, the reactor was tripped from 91% power due to AFD approaching po,1tive tech spec limit. The unit was returned or-line at 0608 on 07/16. During the power increase the unit wa> held at 8% power from 0653 to 0739 on 07/16 for shift turnover, at 30% power from 1030 on 07/16 to 1430 on 07/17 for secondary chemistry, at 40% power from 1534 to 1615 on 07/17 for governor valve mode transfer, and at 51% power from 1b30 on 07/17 to 1713 on 07/18 for reactor protection system recalibration. The unit retuned to 100% full power at 0500 on 07/19, and operated at or near 300% full power for the remainder of the month.
