Containment Spray /RHR Motor Oil Foaming

Dear Mr. Seidle:

On May 12, 1983, Mr. Michael D. Hall of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) reported a potential 10CFR50.55(e) issue concerning oil foaming in the contain-ment spray pump and residual heat removal (RHR) pump motors to Mr. Johns Jaudon of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV.

Subsequent evaluation of this matter has revealed that a safety concern does not exist.

This initial concern developed while running a containment spray pump motor and foaming was observed in the oil sight gauge. The RHR trators are of a similar design and were therefore included in the initial reporting of this matter even though they had not been run.

A Westinghouse field engineer has since monitored a test run of the same motor and verified that the degree of foaming being observed is normal and riot excessive for this type of motor and sfght glass arrangement.

KG&E has concluded that a significant deficiency does not exist and that this matter is not reportable pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e). Documentation concerning the evaluation of this issue will be maintained by KGEE and is available for your review. Please direct any further questions concerning this subject to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.

Yours very truly, Y
