Subject:
Byron Generating Station Units 1 and 2 Braidwood Generating Station Units 1 and 2 Limitorque Valve Operators NRC Docket Nos. 50-454, 50-455, 50-456, and 50-457 Reference (a):
September 14, 1982 letter from T. R.
Tramm to J. G. Keppler.
Dear Mr. Keppler:
This letter provides the final report on a potential deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR-50.55(e) regarding Limitorque valve operators at Byron and Braidwood stations.
The 30-day report was provided in reference (a).
For your tracking purposes this deficiency is numbered 82-06 for Byron and 82-05 for Braidwood.
Reference (a) indicated the possibility that pinion keys in Limitorque Model SB0 operators were made of an inappropriate material.
Based upon extensive analysis, metallurgical evaluations and performance tests on the affected pinion keys, Westinghouse and Limitorque have concluded that the pinion key failures were a result of circumstances peculiar to SB-0-25 Limitorque operators installed on valves manufactured at Westinghouse EMD.
Therefore, appropriate corrective action is only required on the SB0 series Limitorque motor operators installed on Westinghoue EMD manufactured valves.
There were no such valves shipped to Byron or Braidwood Stations from Westinghouse EMD.
Although the valves identified in the referenced letter are equipped with Model SB0 j
operators, they are not within the scope of the potential deficiency because the valves were not manufactured at Westinghouse EMD.
Please direct any further questions you may have regarding this matter to this office.
Very truly your,
0304040526 030329 DR ADOCK 05000 p
