Chicago, Illinois 60690 March 28, 1983 Mr. James G. Keppler, Regional Administrator Directorate of Inspection and Enforcement - Region III U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 Subje:t:
Byron Generating Station Units 1 and 2 Braidwood Generating Station Units 1 and 2 Barton Instrument Accuracy NRC Docket Nos. 50-454, 50-455, 50-456, and 50-457-1 Reference (a):
January 28, 1983, letter from T. R. Tramn to J. G. Keppler.
Dear Mr. Keppler:
This letter provides a second interim report on a deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding the accuracy of Barton electronic instrument transmitters being installed at Byron and Braidwood stations.
The 30-day report on this deficiency was provided in reference (a).
For your tracking purposes this deficiency is numbered 82-11 for Byron and 82-12 for Braidwood.
As indicated in reference (a), appropriate actions to correct the thermal non-repeatability problems with Barton transmitters are being established by the manufacturer.
It appears from the. test data presently available at Barton that the addition of an insulating washer to be installed between the potentiometer housing the transmitter base should provide an adequate resolution under accident environmental conditions.
However, an unresolved problem still exists with these transmitters wherein a change in total accuracy occurs under abnormal
+
environmental conditions due to an increased temperature coefficient.
This problem is present even after the addition of the washer.
This problem is still being investigated.
