Dear Mr Grier:

Subject:
Oycter Creek Nuclear Generatfog Station Docket No. 50-219
~
Dilution Pump Improvement Program In our original submittal, dated July 1,1981, GPU Nuclear (GPUN) presented a proposed course of action to ameliorate the Oyster Creek Station dilution pumps '
reliability and operability. Initially it was proposed that full implementation of the corrective actions would be achieved, considering delivery of equipment and installation time required, by August 1983. However, as work progressed and upon further inspection of the system, it has been identifie'd that the pump diffusers also require replacement. These parts have to be specially fabricated and it is pre sently estimated that this equipment will be on site in August of 1983.
Presently, approximately 35 percent of the overall dilution pump renovation is complete. This includes the complete rebuilding of one dilution' pump, installation of one lube oil cooler, new pipe installation, and installation of -
self cleaning pipe line strainers. Based upon the anticipated receipt datei'of the dif fusers and their required installation time, GPUN estimates that the dilution pump system renovation will now be completed November,1983.
.It. should be n'oted that if the dif fusers did not need replacement, the dilution pdmp-system renovation would have been completed by our originally projected Aukust,1983 completion date. Als o, the dilution pump system refurbishment is not part of the critical path for the present refueling and maintenance outage which is presently expected to be completed by January 1984. With the incorporation of Amendment 66 into Appendix B of the Oyster Creek Environmental Technical Specifications and by the conditions of our NJPDES permit, it is not necessary to operate the dilution pumps when the station is not operating. Under the presently revised schedule for the dilution pump system renovation, work on the pump system will be' completed well in advance of the return to operation of the station and therefore, before operation or operability of the diultion pumps is required by our NJPDES permit.
