Dea r Mr. Keppler:

This is to provide the final report on a 50.55(e) reportable deficiency regarding the welding o f HVAC duct supports and s ti f feners a t Braidwood. For NRC tracking purposes this deficiency is numbered 82-01.

In re ference (c) we indicated that the adequacy o f existing duct stiffeners and duct supports was being evaulated on a case-by-case basis. That work has been completed and a number of field modifications will be required.

The duct evaluation consisted o f determining the actual duct accessory weight and location on the duct, witF. respect to stiffener and companion angles. The reaction on the stif fener/ companion angle was then determined using the actual weight and location. The design o f the stif fener/ companion angle was evaluated based on knowing the design basis allowable reactions. Where the design basis allowables are exceeded, field modifications will be required. It was found that 155 accessories cause failure o f 34 stif feners and 69 companion angles.

J. G. Keppler Septembe r 21, 1982 The duct support evaluation consisted of evaluating the actual design basis forces at -the support internal connections.

Comparison was made to the reduced design basis allowables due to less weld provided than specified. It was found that 26 duct supports have inadequate weld capacity. Field modification will be performed by adding additional weld for these cases.

The necessary field modifications to the duct stiffeners and duct supports will- be completed prior to fuel load.

Please address further questions regarding this matter to this office.

Very truly yours,
