Dear Mr. Jordan:

Subj ect: Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station IE Bulletin No. 81-03, Request for Additional Information On May 29, 1981, GPU Nuclear Corporation submitted it's response to IE Bulletin No. 81-03 Flow Blockage of Cooling Water to Safety Components by Corbicuin sp. (Asiatic Clam) and hytilus sp. (Mussel). Subsequently, on December 23, 1982, GPU Nuclear Corporation received your letter dated December 20, 1983, requesting additional information concerning the subject bulletin.

While CPUN has initiated appropriate action to respond to your request; because of the dedication of ef fort required to adequately and completely address these questions and the concurrent requirement of personnel devoted, prior to, and during the present refueling and maintenance outage, CPUN will submit it's response by August 19, 1983.

This is based upon the following considerations:

(1) it will be necessary to develop a program of inspection and a method to more ef fectively monitor the condition of the heat exchangers, and (2) develop and execute a program of study to evalute alternative methods to control biofouling. This evaluation will be based upon the technical adequacy of each design and current environmental considerations, such as the recent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ruling for chlorine minimization, to reduce the af feet on the receiving waters.

In closing, it is our opinion that such an extention is not excessim, given the magnitude of the aformentioned undertaking.
