MEMO FOR FACSIMILE TRANSMISSION TO CONFIRM PROMPT c.4 b REPORTABLE OCCURRENCE 389-83-1 INOPERABLE DIESEL GENERATORS - MODE 6 .
This memo is to confirm the telephone _ conversation with Mr. Bruce Wilson of your office at 1 p.m. on April 17, 1983.
On April 16, 1983, at about 5:30 during a review of Unit 2 status, it was found that the DC powered ~ soakback oil pump on "B" D/G was out of service.
- ("A" D/G was out of service (since 4/14/83) for fire protection modifica-tions.) This pump provides lube oil to the D/G turbocharger during startup of the D/C (before the main oil pump is up to speed) f the AC powered pump (which was operating) is lost. Had a loss of power occurred, the "B" D/G would have started with degraded lube oil supply. Based on previous experience with identical D/G we have a high degree of confidence "B" D/G would have started several times in this mode but can not call the unit OPERABLE per Tech Specs. ACTION per TS 3.8.1.2 was verified to already exist. The pump motor was replaced (with one from the "A" D/G)
- and tested by 8:34 p.m., restoring "B" D/G to OPERABLE status. The cause is not yet known.
Note: On April 18, 1983, a review of the full out of service log found that "A" D/G was considered out of service from April 2, 1983 through 4/12/83 while core loading was in progress due to its fuel transfer pump being out of service. It is not yet known if "A" D/G was tagged out/
disabled or not. If it was not disabled, it would have started and run-for several hours on fuel in its day tank.
