Dear Mr. Haynes:
In accordance with the Technical Specifications of Facility Operating j License No. DPR-26, the following confirms our notification on March 1, 1983 to Mr. Thomas Foley of your office, of a potential Reportable Occur-rence LER 83-004. This event is the type defined in Technical Specification Section 6.9.1.7. On March 1,1983, Con Edison determined that the shaft material in square motor, housing residual heat removal pump No. 22 was carbon steel instead of stainless steel. A safety evaluation concluded that the change does not involve an unreviewed safety question based on use of the present RHR pump shaft material and configuration for a period not. longer than 24 calendar months of normal operation. The present equipment will be replaced within this time period in accordance with the recomendations of the nuclear components manufacturer. The mar.afacturer and motor model number is Westinghouse 5008-P20. The manufacturer and pump model number is Ingersoll-Rand 8X20W.
