Mr. James G. Keppler U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 ULNRC-592

Dear Mr. Keppler:

INTERIM 10CFR50.55(e) REPORT NO. U-40 WIDE RANGE RCS PRESSURE TRANSMITTERS CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 On April 9,1982 we informed NRC Region III of a potential significant deficiency regarding reactor coolant system wide range pressure instrumentation.

On Jt:1y 20,1982 this matter was upgraded to a reportable significant deficiency as defined by 10CFR50.55(e).

'lhe deficiency involves the reactor coolant system wide range pressure transmitter error in a post-accident environment being greater than the accuracy required by the safety analysis report. This deficiency is still under review by Westinghouse in an effort to fully determine the effects on system interactions.

Given the magnitude of this review, we anticipate submitting a final report to NRC by February 1983.

Very truly yours, c
