Mr.

D. B. Vassallo, 011ef Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Vassallo:

SUMMARY

On October 19, 1982, a telephone conference call was held between the NRC and Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L). Participants were Dan Fieno of the NRC and Jim McQueen, Ken Karcher, and Kermit Cantrell of CP&L.

The purpose of this call was to provide an update to CP&L's May 24, 1982 letter regarding plans for the submittal of our BWR steady-state methods for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant.

DISQJSSION The following items were discussed:

1.

Based on communications between the NRC and CP&L and other technical considerations, the scope of the topical report l

relating to CP&L benchmarking of the RECORD and PRESTO-B codes has been modified. The present schedule calls f or completion of a draf t topical report of our BWR steady-state neutronics and l

thermal hydraulics by mid-November.

These draft reports will l

then be discussed with NRC.

2.

The final topical report submittal will include four volumes.

These will cover the lattice physics technical aspects (RECORD),

the nodal simulation technical aspects (PRESTO-B), the CP&L benchmarking of these methods, and the CP&L reference steady-state thermal-hydraulic methodology. The schedule f or fina' submittal of all volumes will be determined based on discussions with NRC regarding the draf t reports.

If no substantial modification to these reports is required, a final submittal is envisioned by January 1983.
