POTENTIAL CONSTRUCTION DEFICIENCY GROUT INTRUSION INTO DRYWELL AIRGAP HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION sn On September 20, c1982, a verbal report was made to Region I, Office of Insggction and Enforcement representative, Mr. W.

Lazarus, advisAngibf a potential significant construction deficiency donserning grout seepage into the airgap between the drywell jn3 t$e shield wall. The following interim report is prgqpde.d.in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e). ($

Subsequent to grohN placement 1-CXF-004 around the lower portion of the Reactor #1 drywell, grout and laitance were observed in two locations in the torus area at elevation 54 '

and at the annulus of three instrumentation penetrations.

Bechtel Power Corporation has taken action to determine the cause of the grout spillage and any detrimental effect that it may have had on the drywell airgap. This action includes:

- Use of Fiberoptics to identify and map intrusions and laitance;

- Removal of grout intrusions at the instrumentation penetrations by hydrolaser; and

- Research into other methods of removing grout, should this be necessary.

The, situation is presently under evaluation for corrective action, as required. A final report, to include an analysis of the safety implications and a schedule for completion of corrective actions, is expected to be submitted to your office by December 31, 1982.
