' PURPOSE, DESCRIPTION, CRITERIA AND CONCLUSIONS 1.

Purpose A formal stress analysis and requalification of 20" GPE l

Vacuum Breaker Model LS-240-335 is presented herein.

In the earlier stress analysis investigation by the vendor (GPE-Controls), certain adverse effects due to Loca Pool Swell event inluding impulsive impact and angular momentum were ignored.

These effects, during recent investigation on Mark-II containment, present a high probability of an excessive increase in overall stress levels.

These phenomena must be evaluated for the check valve during one full cycle excursion of the valve pellet.

It will be assumed that both the valves are in the same phase all times.

2., Description During the Loca Pool Swell phase,,the check valve suddenly.

opens with an impulsive force.

Each pellet in a fully-opened position is subjected to impulsive load and an alternating pressure differential.

It is assumed that both pellets open or close simultaneously and are in the same phase at all times, thus ignoring the effects of wave propogation and reflections upon each other.

The impulsive fluid load and pressure differential cause the valve disc to swing open with a maximum opening velocity of 14.2 radiams per sec

(.See Ref. 11.

It is assumed that the valve disc is synchronized with the actuating arm of the plunger and its motion, when the valve opens or closes.

The valve disc fully opens due to an impulsive fluid force, attains the maximum angular momentum, separating frcm the l

roller assembly to a maximum sweep of 16" (See Dwg. LS-240-335 Ref. 2).

It is then stopped by means of the rubber stoppers mounted on the bracket assembly.

The pallet is impacted in l

this position by the action of external fluid dynamic forces due to angular momentum and pressure differential.

During the' return sweep, inpulsive force and pressure differential loads again act and the disc impacts against the lower stoppers and the roller assembly.

Criteria Loca-induced and other type of loadings such as dead-weight and and seismic will be combined to produce the maximum stresses in the hinge and other hardware.

Loca-induced stresses on structural elements will be increased by means of dynamic load factor, which varies from 1.50 to 2.0.

Two-different posicions of the valve disc will be taken into consideration.

These are:

1) Nhen valve is fully opened and 2) when valve is forced shut impacting against the assembly roller and two stoppers.

Only one full cycle-event will be investigated in the analysis.

Conclusions From the present investigation, it is concluded that total stress levels in valve components, due to seismic, Loca and pressure-differentials including impulsive dynamic effects, are well within the allowable stresses.

These allowable stresses, permissible by ASME Section-III code at 350*F are higher than the actual stresses in each component.

It is, however, mandatory to ascertain that under these extreme conditions, none of the valve components reaches the' yield stress conditions, which is a criteria for the operability of the valve under maximum specified loading conditions.

The valve components satisfy this criteria.
