McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 NRC Inspection Report No. 50-369, 370/86-19 Violation 50-370/86-19-02 Discontinued Refueling Canal Cleanliness Watch Gentlemen:
McGuire Nuclear Station's response to violation 50-370/86-19-02 dated September 26,1986 concerned the undetected entry of objects into the reactor coolant system. Our response indicated maintenance procedure MP/0/A/7150/12 (incorrectly stated in the response as MP/O/A/7150/86) entitled " Refueling Canal Cleanliness Watch" was implemented on July 17,1986 to ensure the refueling canal is continuously watched to prevent items from being dropped into the reactor coolant system during refueling operations.
The watch ensured that all items taken over the canal me tied of! and items brought into the containment building are logged in and out.
Monitoring of refueling canal cleanliness during subsequent refueling operations indicated improved performance in preventing the entry of objects into the reactor coolant system. Based on improved performance and increased expelence in refueling operations, MP/0/ A/7150/12 was revised on March 23, 1993 to change from a continuous watch to our current practice of a verification of refueling canal cleanliness once per shift during refueling operations. Refueling canal cleanliness will be monitored during refueling operations and procedure MP/0/A/7150/12 revised, as appropriate, based on performance.
