CONTAINMENT BASE MAT ARS NORTH ANNA UNITS 1 & 2 At the meeting held between Stone & Webster, Virginia Electric and Power Company, and members of your staff at Bethesda, Maryland, on November 7,1980, we discussed our Ictter dated November 7,1980 (Serial No. 903), addressing containment Base Mat Amplified Response Spectra (ARS).

In accordance with your verbal request, made during the ensueing discussion, we have generated containment base mat ARS using a lumped mass - spring model and time history analysis method described in the FSAR Appendix 3B.

These base mat ARS are given in figures 1 through 4, attached.

The containment base mat ARS calculated from this time history analysis are very conservative with respect to the smooth ground response spectra, because the artificial earthquake chosen to represent free field time history is conservative (shown in figure 5, attached). The figure 5 also shows comparison between the mat response spectra and the ground response spectra generated from artificial l

time history.

At all elevations above the containment mat, the ARS remain as originally calculated by the frequency response method. This method was defined in FSAR l

Section 3.7.2.

Evaluation of _all safety-related components given in Tables I, II, and III of our letter dated November 7,1980 (Serial No. 903) have now been completed for smooth ground response spectra, and we find them all acceptable without any design modifications.
