Dear Sir:

ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF SAFETY-RELATED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT PROPOSED ENVIRONMENTAL TEST PROGRAMS SURRY POWER STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 This is in response to your letter of October 1, 1980, requesting pertinent information relative to environmental qualification tests to be conducted within the next two years on equipment used or to be used in our facilities.

Based on licensing requirements for North Anna Unit 2 and in compliance to the NRC "Memorandum and Order (CLI-80-21)" dated May 23, 1980 for Surry Units 1 and 2 and North Anna Unit 1, we have submitted a revision to our NUREG-0588 and IE Bulletin 79-0lB 90-Day reviews which addressed Vepco' s proposed com-ponent environmental test programs. These test programs are described below in an effort to assist in your planning and scheduling of NRC audits of test programs.

A. Transmitter Qualification Test Program (North Anna and Surry)

1. Vepco is presently participating in an owner's group transmitter qualification program. A meeting was held on July 30, 1980, with the NRC staff on the program. The NRC representatives included Dr. Zoltan Rosztoczy, Chief of the Equipment Qualifi-cation Branch of NRR. Dr. Rosztoczy has been kept informed on the progress of the test program by the lead utility Wisconsin Electric Power Company. The components that are being tested are Foxboro NE-10 Series and Rosemount 1153D transmitters.
2. The successfully tested transmitters would replace present installed transmitters that monitor the following parameters:

3. The owner's group transmitter qualification program will be conducted at Wyle Laboratories and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 1981.
4. The Vepco contact for this test program is Mr. J.M. Davis, (804) 771-3868.

B. Cable Qualification Test Programs (Surry)

1. We have identified the following vendors that supplied cable as part of Surry' s original purchasing effort that lack actual test data:

1.1 Collyer Insulated Wire Company 1.2 General Electric Wire & Cable 1.3 Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Sales, Inc.

1.4 Continental Wire and Cable Company 1.5 Okonite Company

e VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY TO Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director 2. We are reviewing the station drawings and records to make a determination of the components associated with the above cable manufacturers. This effort will be completed by December 1, 1980.

3. When the amount of cable from the subject vendors has been identified which is associated with each safety-related applicable component, we will make the determination whether the cable should be tested or replaced. We have contacted qualified test facilities and will commence testing the cable, that is not to be replaced, pending availability of the test facilities. The course of action that we intend to follow will be outlined and forwarded to the NRC on December 1, 1980.
4. The Vepco contact for the future test programs on cable will be Mr. J.M. Davis, (804) 771-3868.

If we can be of assistance in clarifying or interpreting the above information, please advise.

Very truly yours,
