Dear Sir:
The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) operates under U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) license number 19-08330-02.
AFRRI has been under the adininistrative control of the Defense Nuclear Agency, a
component of the Department of Defense (DoD), since the Institute's founding in 1961.
On October 1, 1993, the Department of Defense transferred administrative control of AFRRI to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), another DoD component.
As was the case under the Defense Nuclear Agency, the Director of AFRRI remains the byproduct materials licensee and retains the same full operational, safety, and emergency control over the Institute which existed before the transfer.
The Department of Defense remains the ultimate owner of the Institute and source of funding.
Certification of responsibility for decommissioning costs, originally assumed by the Defense Nuclear Agency on behalf of the Department of Defense (
