l li The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) has operated a TRIGA Mark-F nuclear research reactor (docket number 50-170) since 1962 under U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC)1 i
license number R-84.
AFRRI has been under the administrative control of the Defense Nuclear Agency, a component of the Department of.
Defense (DoD), since the Institute's. founding in 1961.
On October 1, 1993, the Department of Defense transferred administrative control of AFRRI to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), another DoD component.
l As was the case under the Defense Nuclear Agency, the Director of

AFRRI remains the reactor licensee and retains the same full operational, safety, and emergency control over the reactor facility
'l which existed before the transfer.
The Department of Defense remains the ultimate owner of the facility and source of funding.
Certification of responsibility for reactor indemnification and decommissioning costs, originally assumed'by the Defense. Nuclear Agency on behalf of the Department of Defense (
