Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Equipment Qualification
Dear Mr. Denton:
Over the past several years, various submittals and much correspondence have been provided to the NRC staff by South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) to document baseline equipment qualification to the guidelines of NUREG 0588 and the status of qualification where it has not been completed.
This letter contains information and schedule updates for remaining items of interest.
The Narrow Range RdF RTD seismic and environmental qualification reports have been reviewed and found to be acceptable.
These reports are proprietary and are kept in the Permanent Records Storage Facility at the Virgil C.
Summer Nuclear Station.
The staf f had requested information concerning the manufacturer of the " phenolic type" fuse blocks installed in the Chemelex Heat Tracing Panels.
These fuse blocks were manufactured and qualified by Bryant Company and subsequently supplied in their present configuration by Chemelex.
These fuse blocks have been reviewed and found to be acceptable.
This qualification documentation is also on file in the Permanent Records Storage Facility at the Virgil C.
Summer Nuclear Station.
The staf f had requested information on the method of beta dose qualification for equipment. With the exception of splices and cables, all other beta sensitive pieces of equipment are enclosed or constructed such that beta dose considerations are not applicable as a result of inherent shielding in these installations.
For cables and splices, the Di b 8207280089 820723 PDR ADOCK 05000395 A

Mr. Harold R.
Denton July 23, 19b2 Page #2 actual qualification dose rates are in excess of 2 x 108 Rads which provide extremely large margins for expected dose rates associated with postulated normal and/or accident conditions.
This information has been included and documented in Revision 4 to the Virgil C.
Summer Nuclear Station NUREG 0588 Submittal.
Additionally, there are several items, all of which have been discussed previously with the NRC and justif!Jation for interim operation provided, for which qualif::ation documentation or testing is incomplete at this time.
The following is a list of these items and our current completion schedules:
1.
Electric Hydrogen Recombiners - October 1, 1982 2.
D.
G. O'Brien Triax Connectors - October 1, 1982 3.
Crosby Position Indication Switches - December 31, 1982 4.
Veritrak Transmitter - December 31, 1982 5.
Core Subcooling Monitor Equipment - June 1983 SCE&G will inform the NRC of any schedule changes that would affect completion of qualification of this remaining equipment.
Any such schedule change would support the SCE&G goal of final equipment environmental qualification by the end of the first refueling outage after June 1983, unless further extensions are granted in the final rulemaking in 10CFR50.49.
Maintenance and surveillance procedures are being developed for all equipment for which qualification documentation to NUREG 0588 has been accepted.
As the documentation of these remaining pieces of equipment is accepted, the equipment will be added to the program.
Very trul you r s,
