BELLEFONTE NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 - WELD DEFECTS ON REACTOR BUILDING COOLER SUPPORTS - BLRD-50-438/82 FIRST INTERIM REPORT The subject deficiency was initially reported to NRC-0IE Inspector R. V. Celenjak on June 21, 1982 in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55(e) as NCR 1853 Enclosed is our first interim report. We expect to submit our next report by October 26, 1982. We consider 10 CFR Part 21 applicable to this deficiency.

Reactor Building (RB) cooler coils exhibit either or both lack of j
fusion and undercut (greater than 1/32 inch and less than 1/8 inch).
j The welds were fabricated by the manufacturer, American Air Filter (AAF)
Company, Incorporated, Louisville, Kentucky, and the units were supplied to TVA under the NSSS contract awarded to Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) of Lynchburg, Virginia. AAF drawings specify that welding shall conform to AWS Code D1.1, Revision 2, dated 1974.
Interim Progress TVA has contacted B&W in order to determine the corrective action necessary to provide resolution of this nonconformance. Further information will be provided when this determination has been made.
