Docket Nos. 50-338 and 50-339 Mr. W. L. Stewart Senior Vice President - Nuclear Virginia Electric and Power Company 5000 Dominion Blvd.
Glen Allen, Virginia 23060
Dear Mr. Stewart:
SUBJECT:
NORTH ANNA UNITS 1 AND 2 - REVIEW 0F RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER NO. 88-20, SUPPLEMENT NO. 4 - INDIVIDUAL PLANT EXAMINATIONS FOR EXTERNAL EVENTS (TAC NOS. M83647 AND M83648)
The NRC issued Supplement 4 to Generic Letter 88-20 on June 28, 1991 to require each licensee and each Construction Permit holder to conduct an individual plant examination of external events (IPEEE).
Guidance was provided with the generic letter supplement in the form of NUREG-1407,
" Procedural and Submittal Guidance for the Individual Plant Examination of External Events (IPEEE) for Severe Accident Vulnerabilities." The supplement requested a response that would a) identify the method and approach selected for the IPEEE, 2) describe the method to be used if it has not previously been submitted for staff review, and 3) identify the milestones and schedule for performing the IPEEE and submittal of the results to the NRC.
Following our review of your initial response to Supplement 4, we informed you by letter on June 26, 1992 that your scheduled completion date did not support the Commission's goal of closure on the severe accident issue by mid-1994. You subsequently provided additional justification for the completion date.
We have reviewed your letter dated September 18, 1992, and, although later than the staff would have preferred, we have determined that your schedule is acceptable.
Please inform us of any changes to your schedule or methodology.
Sincerely, (Original Signed By)
Leon 8. Engle, Project Manager Project Directorate II-2 Division of Reactor Projects - I/II Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc:
