Attention: Mr. R. S. Leddick I Program Director, WNP-3/5 i

Gentlemen:

Subject:

Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Deficiency - RT Indications.

Safety Injection Tanks and Reactor Pump Supports

Reference:

Letter dated June 4,1982 Leddick to Bishop, G03-82-564 l

I Thank you for your report on the subject deficiency, which was forwarded i by the referenced letter. From our review of the report, we find 1 that more infomation is needed in order to evaluate one of the

! identified deficiencies. We are particularly concerned about the

! linear indications which have been found in the safe-ends of the nozzles on two of the WNP-3 tanks.

Your report states that Combustion Engineering has addressed these safe-end indications in separate correspondence with the USNRC (re:

CE letter LD-82-052) and implies that only conditions which originated 1 at the WNP-3/5 site need be addressed as a consequence. Combustion Engineering did not discuss the linear indications in that report.

i Irregardless, it is our position that the subject of these indications should also be addressed by the licensee and the matter should not be closed until the licensee is satisfied with the entire scope of disposition and corrective action taken.

l Please provide this office with the necessary supplementary information i and the position of the Washington Public Power Supply System regarding the resolution of the total problem at WNP-3/5 with the safety injection

! tanks.

Sincerely, i

T. W. Bishop. Chief Reactor Construction Projects Branch s 8206280520 s20622 C.
