50-424/82-05 50-425/82-05 File: X7BG10 Log: GN-169 Attention: F. J. Long Gentlemen:

The Georgia Power Company wishes to submit the following information concerning the violation discussed in your inspection report 50-424/82-05 and 50-425/82-05.

We do not concur w:th the finding identified concerning " Failure to Follow Inspection Procedure". A group of qualified visual welding inspectors performed a thorough inspection of the affected weld. The total length of the vertical weld was measured to be fifty six and one half inches (56S").

The affected area of underfill was approximately seven inches (7") or 12 percent of the weld length. The worst area of the weld was marked using a one inch grid and the underfill was measured in each grid. There was no underfill that exceeded one-sixteenth (1/16) of an inch.

The width of the weld crown did not vary unreasonably and the group concluded that the fit-up of the plates prior to welding exaggerated the appearance of the underfill in the final weld.

Based on our inspection the weld in question meets the criteria for undercut (underfill) as specified in specification X2AP01.
