Gentlemen:

This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs.

C. J. Paperiello and J. A. Pagliaro of this office on February 22-24, 1982,

of activities at Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant authorized by NRC Operating

License No. DPR-43 and to the discussion of our findings with you at the

conclusion of the inspection.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during

the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective

No items of noncompliance with NRC requirements were identified during the

course of this inspection.

Ilowever, this exercise indicated two areas of weakness that need improvement.

They are:

(1) training of health physics technicians to perform release rate

calculations, and

(2)

relocation of the Emergency Operations Facility to a more radiologically

safe area.

We understand you are initiating action to correct these matters.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of

this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC's

Public Document Room.
