CONSTRUCTION DEFICIENCY REPORT (ATIS 502500124 - VITS On August 21, 1980, we contacted the QA Manager of the Atlas Machine &
' Iron Works. in Gainesville, Virginia, to obtain information concerning the products it manufactures and its contribution to the nuclear in-dustry. We were informed that the ccmpany vias a job shop.
The company does not hold any ASME certificates of author,ization, and the only nuclear contract it hc is with TVA, for the steam tunnel embedments-
- for Hartsville and Phipps Bend.
Atlas has developed a quality program, with TVA guidance, which in the OA Manager's judgement, meets the program requirenents stipulated in TVA's procurement documents. We were also informed that Atlas is ex-periencing distortions during welding which have resulted in dimensional and alignment problems, which have been reported to TVA, but have not as
,,j yet been dispositioned.
Since the only nuclear contract is with TVA, the problems identified are generic only to TVA plants and apprcpriate disposition of the oroblems are TVA's contractual responsibilities.
