Subject:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Earthquake Instrumentation

Dear Mr. Denton:

South Carolina Electric and Gas (bmpany (SCE&G) has determined that one of the earthquake monitoring instruments within the Virgil C. Sununer Nuclear Station should be relocated to a more appropriate point for data analysis. A detailed description of the proposed change is given in the discussion that follows.

The particular instr ment involved is one of the triaxial peak accelero-graphs. The instrument is presently mounted on instrumentation tubirs beneath the reactor vessel. %e location found to be more suitable for this instrument is the pressurizer surge line near its intersection with reactor coolant piping. We instrument will be rigidly attached to a strap mounted on the surge line at this location. One reason for this change is due to the accessibility requirements of these instrments in the event of an earthquake. %e other is that it has been determined that readings obtained from the instrtunent on the surge line would be more useful in evaluating the plant's resInnse to an earthquake.

The specific FSAR changes will be forwarded as soon as they are finalized. We expect this change to be canpleted by June 30, 1982.

If there are any questions, please advise.

Very truly yours, T. C. Nichols, Jr.
