Dear 11r. Jones:
SUBJECT:
Il1PLEf!ENTATION OF UNRESOLVED SAFETY ISSUE A-10 BWR N0ZZLE CRACKIt'G RE: Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit 2 Dy letter dated December 17, 1981 you pmvided additional information concerning your earlier mquest to perforn dye-penetrant inspection of only the accessible portions of the nozzle blend radius on the Brunswick Unit 2 feedwater nozzles. You assert that this request is only for the 1982 refueling outage, and that adhemnce to the NUREG-0Gl9 Table 2 Inspection Requirements will begin with the. refueling outage presently scheduled for late 1983. Performance of the inspection at this later time would permit it to be conducted in conjunction with the scheduled feedwater sparger replacement.
11e concur with your assessment that, based on:
(1) the successful results of previous liquid penetrant tests; (2) the fact that the acces-sible area is approximately BM of the total area; and (3) ALARA con-siderations, your request is valid on a one-time basis. Therefore, we consider it acceptable to perforn dye-penetrant inspection of only the accessible portions of the feedwater nozzle blend radius for Brunswick 2 during the 1982 refueling outage.
lic request that you provide us with your sparger replacement / nozzle inspection schedule at least 90 days prior to the start of work. lie consider no other correspondence to be necessary on the subject of A-10 inplementation until your submittal of the reports requested in NUREG-0619.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your Project !!anager.
The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, O!B clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.
