High-Energy Line Break Analysis (BELBA) Pipe Whip Restraint Designs INTERIM 3EPORT 6 DATE:

March 17, 1982 PkOJECT:

Consumers Power Company Midland Plant Units 1 and 2 Bechtel Job 7220 Introduction This report provides the current status of MCAR 40 and actions performed since Interim Report 5.

Status of Action Items An investigation by the technical staff of appropriate methods for modeling thrust force time histories was completed duriag the period covered by this interim report. Based on their recommendations, the project is prinarily using the computer program PRTHRUST in conjunction with the PIPERUP structural analysis code to determine whether or not restraints as designed will meet design requirements. Results thus far indicate that most of them can be shown to meet design requirements.

Status of Restraints The attached table, originally included with Interim Report 2 and updated in Interim Report 4, shows the current status of restraints potentially affected by the concern of MCAR 40.

As before, entries lef t blank indicate incomplete analyses.

Because HELBA analysis is still being carried out, a number of additional restraints have been deleted from the table since Interim Report 4 due to pipe rerouting, shif ts in break locations, changes in analysis assumptions, etc.

The total number of potentially af fected restraints is now 128. It should be noted that these changes have also resulted in the requirement for a number of new restraints which are being designed according to the current design requirements.

l

j 062845 062773 The other significant changes since Interim Report 4 are the verification of several restraints, primarily on the main steam lines outside contain-ment, and the decision to redesign the restraint scheme for the reactor coolant system letdown lines outside containment due to the fnereased forces.

The attached table will be updated again in the next interim report.
