ATTENTION J L CREWS DOCKET 50-312, RANC110 SECO NUCLEAR GiMERATING STATION UNIT NO. 1 This letter is the response to your July 14, 1981 request for additional information about the test of IIPI pump operation without lube oil cooling reported by our letter of May 5,1981.

Our letter of July 1,1981 did make the statement that the test conducted for LER 81-16 assured proper operation of the llPI system independent of lube oil coolers.

Our conclusion was not meant to imply that the llPI pumps do not require lube oil cool-ing nor was there any intent to convey the idea that the lube oil coolers should be removed or that Rancho Seco intended to operate the llPI pumps without lube oil cooling.

The conclu-sion of the test was that operation of the IIPI pumps for an extended period of time is possibic with lube oil heat exchanger coolant flow restricted.

A description of the plans to periodically verify the opera-bility of the lube oil coolers was contained in our March 30, 1981 letter addressed to Mr. R.11. Engelken.

These acticas are outlined here:

1.

All lube oil heat exchanger tubes have been cicaned; all heads have been abrasive blasted.

2.

An industrial epoxy coating has been applied to the head surface in contact with coolant in one heat exchanger.

3.

All lube oil heat exchangers will be disassembled and inspected during October of this year.

The coated head will be comparcu with the uncoated heads.

4.

Further action, as deemed necessary by the results of the inspection, will be determined after the inspec-tion.
