Our letter of July 1, 1981 did make the statement that the test conducted for LER 81-16 assured proper operation of the HPI system indepeni;ent of lube oil coolers.
Our con-clusion was not meant to imply that the HPI pumps do not 4
require lube oil cooling, nor was there any intent to con-vey the idea that the lube oil coolers should be removed 1
or that Rancho Seco intended to operate the HPI pumps with-out lube oil cooling.
The conclusion of the test was that operation of the HPI pumps for an extended period of time is possible with lube oil heat exchanger coolant flow restricted.
A description of measures designed to ensure continued unimpaired performance of the HPI pump lube oil teat exchangers at Rancho Seco has been forwarded to the NRC Region V office.
Should additional information about these measures be required, please contact either the Region V office or the District.
