n QUESTION 4.

What are the accident rates along roads that must be travelled to bring materials-to the disposal sites?

i ANSWER.

NRC staff have no data that specifically relate to-transportation accident rates on the roads leading to existing LLW disposal sites. However, we are sending.

some information from a recent summary of accidents-involvingLtransportation of radioactive materials (see Attachment 2) that may put the question into perspective.

Doth NRC and the Department of Transportation require reporting of transportation accidents or incidents involving radioactive shipments.

During.the eighteen year period covered by the study (1971-1988), there were more than 30 million shipments of radioactive materials. Of these, a total of 788 incidents of actual or suspected y

release of radioactive material, or surface contamination exceeding regulatory L

requirements on either the package or the transport vehicle, were reported.

An-I additional 461 transportation or handling accidents ranging from highway accidents to a forklift puncturing a package were also reported.

None of these reported incidents or accidents, which included LLW shipments, had any adverse effect on.

the public health or safety.
