What is the number of.LLW tisposal sites now in existence and what is the length of tine they have been in operation?
l ANSWER.
There are three existing LLW disposal sites in-operation.
They are located in:
Richland, Washington (licensed-in1965)
Beatty, Nevada (licensedin1962)
Barnwell, South' Carolina (licensedin1971)
There are three additional comercial LLW sites that are now inactive and undergoing closure, located in:
Maxey Flats, Kentucky (licensed in 1962).
Further burial at the site was prohibited in 1977.
Sheffield, Illinois (licensedin1967). The site was closed in 1978 after licensed capacity was reached.-
West Valley,.New York (licensed in 1963).
Disposal' operations were i
voluntarily suspended in 1975.
