EXEMPTION FROM PERFORMING 10 CFR PART 50 APPENDIX J LEAK RATE TESTING l
SHOREHAM NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 1 (tac NO. 75389) i, The Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) has grante-; we enclosed exemption from the leak rate testing requirements of 10 CFR 50.54(o) and 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix J, in response to your letter of December 8,1989. The exemption requested relief from the requirements to perform periodic containment leak rate testing.
On March 16, 1990, we sent you a letter that provided temporary relief from compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.54(o) and Appendix J, Sections i
III.D.1 through III.D.3. This exemption supersedes that March 16, 1990 letter.
This exemption permits you to suspend the Type A, B and C leak rate testing j
required by Appendix J to 10 C3R Part 50.
However, should conditions change such that you decide to returr. Shoreham to power operations, you must demonstrate that containment barriers have not suffered degradation in the absence of periodic testing.
Based on the staff's evaluation contained in the enclo' sed Safety Evaluation, i
the Nuclear Regulatory Counission has granted your exemption pursuant to'10 CFR
- 50.12.. The exemption is being forwarded to the Office of the Federal Register for publication. This completes our action related to the above-referenced TAC number.
