OYSTER CREEK NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION Forked River, New Jersey 08731 special Report 90.-03 ReDort Date Occurrence Date 4/12/90 i

Identification of occurrences i

Fire Diesel Pump 1-1 was removed from service to install a modification and was not restored to a functional status within seven (7) days as required by i

Technical specification 3.12.B.

Deectiotion of occurrence The Fire Diesel' Pump 1-1 was taken out of service to install a modification which replaced the existing pressure switch / recorder mechanism with an upgraded design.

The installation, testing and return to service required eight (8) days.

Analysis of occurrences l

Maintenance on the Fire Diesel Pump automatic start pressure switch / recorder mechanisms was becoming a burden to the Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant.

The switch / recorder mechanisme were difficult to calibrate to within the desired tolerances and no replacement parts were available due to the obsolete design.

As the Fire Diesel 1-2 was functional during the time period the modification was being insta11od in fire diesel 1-1, the safety significance.of this event was minLmal.

I Corrective Action:

1 The modification to Fire Diesel Pump 1-1 pressure switch / recorder me8hanism was completed, tested and returned to functional status on 4/20/90.
