Plants") requires improvements in the design and operation.of commercial nuclear

' power facilities to reduce the. likelihood.of failure to shutdown the reactor-

following anticipated transients, and to mitigate the consequences of an'ATWS-event.- The requirements for Combustion Engineering: plants'such as Arkansas-i Nuclear-One,: Unit'2(ANO-2)aretoprovideadiversescramsystem(DSS),

diverse auxiliary (DTT).feedwatersystem(DAFW) actuation,:anddiverse-initiation-of turbine-trip-Paragraph (c)(6) of the rule requires that information sufficient to demonstrate compliance with the requirements be submitted to NRR.

evaluation SE)onJune'21,1989, addressing the.acceptabilityfof the ANO-2 DSS and DTT designst These ATWS modifications were completed during.the.last refuelingoutageforANO-2L(11/89). The final:ATWS-requirement'for this plant, DAFW or diverse emergency feedn ter actuation system (DEFAS) wasidescribed in=

AP&L's submittal to the staff dated January 15,-1990. The: staff has reviewed this information and as discussed in~the enclosed SE has' concluded that the DEFAS desfgns are acceptable'and meet the requirements of the ATWS rule.

' As per yt-or January submittal, the DEFAS will be-installed during the ANO eighth refueling outage, currently scheduled to be completed in April 1991~.-
