a.
A radioactive material package must be accepted from the carrier at the time it is delivered, b.
If a radioactive material package is to be held at the carrier's terminal for ' pickup, arrangements must be made to receive notification from the carrier of the arrival of the package at the time of arrival.- The package must be picked up expedi-tiously upon receipt of notification (within three hours if practicable).
1.
Upon receipt of a package of radioactive material, ' survey the exterior surfaces of the package and assure that the maximum radiation level does not exceed 200 mrem /hr.
Survey three feet from the exterior surfaces of the packages and assure that the maximum radiation level does not exceed 10 mrom/hr.
If either of these limits are exceeded, notify the Radiation Safety Officer immediately.
. Record the maximum radiation levels measured at.the package surface and at three feet from the package surface on the Receiving Report.
2.
If the package contains radioactive material which is not in special form make a contamination wipe test of the exterior surf ace of the package.
Wipe a representative surf ace of the package, covering an area of approximately 100 square centimeters, using a cloth patch and moderate pressure.
Measure the activity of the patch using the contamination monitor and assure that the activity does not exceed- 0.01 microcurie.
If this limit is exceeded, notify the Radiation.
Safety Officer immediately.
Record the results of this contamination wipe test on the' Receiving Report.
P Note: If any of these limits are exceeded, the Radiation-Safety Officer shall immediately notify the USNRC and the final delivering carrier.
3.
Inspect the package for any _ evidence of physical damage.
Record the results of this inspection on the Receiving-Report.
Also record on the Receiving Report the source model number, source-serial number, radionuclide, activity, transport package model number and package serial number.
Forward a copy of the completed Receiving Report to the Radiation Safety officer.
4.
Assure that the package is locked, or place the package into an outer locked container.
Place the package into the Radioactive Material Storage Room and lock the door to the room.

8.1 Acceptance Tests 8.1.1 Visual. Inspection The package is visually inspected to assure:
1.
.It was. constructed properly in accordance with drawing number 68490.
2.
The labels are inspected to assure they contain the required information as referenced in section 7.
3.
The safety wires are installed through the bolts secur-ing the lock assembly plate on to the device as refer-enced on drawing number 68490.
4.
All fasteners (screws) as required by drawing number 68490.are installed.
The source assembly used in this device is visually inspect-ed to assure proper closure of the weld, to maintain primary containment.
It is also inspected for proper length to assure it. locks in the required storage position.
8.1.2. Structural and' pressure Tests The swage coupling between the source capsule and cable is sub-jected to a static tensile test with a load of 100 pounds.
Failure of this test will prevent the source assembly from being used.
8.l.3 Leak Tests The radioactive source capsule (the primary-containment) is wipe r tested for leakage of radioactive contamination.
The source capsule is subjected to a vacuum bubble leak test.
The capsule 8
is then subjected to a second wipe. test for leakage of radioac-tive contamination.
The. contamination must be less than 0.005
-microcuries.
Failure of any of these tests will prevent use of this source assembly.
The package-is wipe tested on the exterior surface prior to its first shipment in accordance witg 10CFR71.87.
(If this wipe test exceeds 0.001 microcuries/100 cm it will not be shipped.).
8.1.4 Component Tests The lock assembly of the package is tested to assure that security of the source will be maintained.
Failure of this test will prevent use of the package until the lock assembly is cor-rected and retested.

Maintenance Inspection and maintenance of the Model 684 exposure device and the control unit must be performed at intervals not to exceed three months, in accordance with 10 CFR 34.28.
' Drive Cable, Control Housings and Source Guide Tubes 1.
Disconnect.the control unit from the exposure device.
2.
Turn the hand crank of-the control unit in the EXPOSE
~(counter clockwise) direction until the crank will no longer turn.
Do not use force, as this may damage the drive wheel inside the control box.
The emergent cable should be cranked into a bucket or other container to keep it clean.
3.
Disconnect the control housing from the RETRACT side of the crank and remove the stop spring from the-drive cable.
The drive cable will now pass through the crank.
4.
Turn the crank.until the drive cable is totally disconnect-ed.
I 5..
Pull the drive cable out through the Model 661 control cable 1
connector and coil it with a radius of no less than 4 inch--
es.
6.
Remove the Model 661 control cable connector and connector.
I plug from the control housings, and disconnect the other j
control housing.from the crank.
Label the housir.gs for proper reassembly.
1 7.
Clean the drive cable with chlorothene and flush the control housings and source guide tubes.
j
- 8 ',
Using compressed dry air (15 psi max. ), thoroughly dry the' j
drive cable,' control housings and guide tubes.
Any remain-(
L ing solvent can cause permanent damage.
l 9.
Check the source. guide - tubes for binding by holding them vertical and dropping a dummy source (or jumper) through j
them.
10.
Wipe the guide tubes and control housings with a cloth 4
soaked in chlorothene and flex them to check for internal 1
damage.
Damage is evidence by a crunching feeling when the
-housing or tube is bent.
While doing this, feel for dents.
l Cut, flattened or burnt control housings or guide tubes should be repaired or replaced.
11.
The guide tubes.or control housings may be covered with tape where only the outer plastic is cut through.

.12.
Using-a Model 550 - no-go gauge, check the male connector of.
the drive, cable.
If the ball of the connector fits through the hole of the gauge or the btl1 shank fits into the slot in the gauge,- the connector is worn and the cable must. be replaced.
Refer to Figure 8.1.
13.
Lightly grease the cable using Mil-G-23827 B grease or equivalent.
Other greases may form tars or corrosive com-pounds when exposed to radiation.
Exposure Device iTo service the exposure device, remove the source following the source changing > procedures.
(Before removing the source, check the. female drive cable connector of the source with a Model 550 no-go gauge, as in Figure 8.1; if the gauge width can fit into
'the female slot, the connector is worn and the source must be replaced.)
After the source has been removed, service the expo-sure device by performing the following steps:
1.
Remove the safety wires through the four bolts.
2.
Remove the rear plate by unscrewing the four bolts-securing it to the exposure device body.
3.-
Unlock the connector lock, and then remove the lock assembly and control unit connector assembly by unscrewing the six socket head screws securing them to the rear plate.
4.
Disassemble ~ the control unit connector assembly, referring to' Figure 8.2 for component identification and for order of removal.
There are several. spring loaded parts in the connector assembly, so care should be taken that'these parts are not lost.
5.
To disassemble the lock assembly, refer to Figure 8.2 fors component -identification and for order of removal.
Remove; the lock (2) from the lock retainer (3) by unscrewing the 6
screw (4) and turn the key about 90'.
6.
Remove the f ront. end plate from the exposure device, and remo've the guide tube connector and retaining ring with Tru Arc pliers, referring to Figure 8.2.
7.
Clean all parts in chlorothene and flush the source tube with solvent.
Dry the parts and the source tube thoroughly using. dry compress ad air ( 20 psi maximum).
Clean the S-Tube in the exposure device by running a cloth soaked with chlo-rothene through it several times.
Dry the S-Tube by running a dry cloth through the tube.

The resulting assembly is shown in Figure 8.2.
Align the re-sulting assembly such that the two large holes in the selec-l tor ring retainer (9) line up with the two large holes in the selector body (6).
The internal locking cam will par-l tially block these holes.
19. ; Insert the anti-rotation lugs (13) and long compression springs (14).into the two large holes in the selector body.
