Dear Mr. Eury:

SUBJECT:

REVIEW 0F BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNITS 1 & 2 ALTERNATE R0D INJECTION AND RECIRCULATION PUMP TRIP SYSTEMS POWER SUPPLY (TACNOS. 73351/73352) l In early February 1989, the NRC resident inspector performed an inspection on the "as-built" Anticipated Transient Without Scram Alternate Rod Injection and Recirculation Pug Trip (ARI/RPT) Systems at the Brunswick l

Steam Electric Plant (BSEP) Units 1 and 2, and noted that the ARI logic and solenoid valves were powere, from the same distribution panel which was also d

used to supply power to the reactor trip system (RTS) analog transmitter trip units (ATTU).

This raised 20 concern regarding the independence of the ARI l

system power sup ly from that of the RTS.

(See Inspection Reports 50-325/89-02 and 50-324/89-02.

In our letter to you dated August 21, 1989, we presented two options by which you could clarify the "as-built" ARI/RPT system power supply at the DSEP, Units 1 and 2.

Ry letters dated October 23, 1989 and March 13, 1990, you provided additional information to demonstrate the reliability of the power supplies and failure nodes and effects analysis to show that common mode failures will not propagate through the power supplies and disable both the RTS and the ARI/RPT systems.

We have reviewed these submittals and found that the design and the "as-built" pl I I 9005040312 900427 PDR ADOCK 05000324 F

Mr. Ly nn W. Eu ry April 27, 1990 configuration for the BSEP, Units 1 and 2, ARI/RPT systems power supply satisfy the option 2 condition as stated in our August 23, 1989 letter.

Therefore, this issue is resolved.

The staff evaluation of your above referenced submittals is enclosed.

Si ncerely.
