1.0 INTRODUCTION
I 1.1 GENERAL This report presents the results of a supplementary field investigation at the service water intake structure, llope Creek Generating Station, for Public Service I
Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G).
The intake structure is to be founded upon unweathered (unoxidized),
cemented Vincentown Sand. However, recent excavation for the structure revealed that the desired founding stratam is situated at a c'epth greater than previously anticipated. Further assessments were consequently required.
I The scope of this work was defined on two occasions, the first on October 27,1981 at the IIope Creek site, the second on November 3 and 4,1981 at the PSE&G offices, Newark. Both meetings were attended by representatives of Dames & Moore, PSE&G and Bechtel Power Corporation.
1.2 PURPOSE AND SCOPE The purposes of this investigation were:
a.
To estimate the elevation of the unweathered (unoxidized) Vincentown
- Sand, b.
To estimate the elevation of the top of the Vincentown Formation.
c.
To obtain samples to confirm the existence of a transition zone between weathered and unweathered (unoxidized) Vincentown Sand.
In order to accomplish these purposes fifteen test borings were drilled at locations shown on the Boring Location Plan, Plate 1.
The depth of penetration of these borings was determined by Dames & Moore in consultation with PSE&G.
Elevations quoted in the report are in feet and refer to PSE&G site datum.
I Dames & Moore l
I Eight of the borings, designated B1 to B8, were put down within the intake structure excavation and were sampled continuously between elevations +34 to +19, using the Standard Penetration Test in accordance with ASTM Designation 1586. The remainder, designated V1 to V6 and D2 were put down around the periphery of the excavation. Borings V1 to V6, were sampled between elevations +70 to +15, in the same manner as Borings B1 to B8.
Boring D2 was sampled continuously between i
elevations +62 to +50 using the split spoon and Denison Sampler
- and between elevations +50 to +5 using the Denison Sampler only.
Field explorations were performed under the technical supervision of Dames & Moore field engineers who examined, identified and described the various soils encountered in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System, Plate 7.
Details of the soils encountered are presented on the borehole logs, Plates 8 to 22.
1.3 RESULTS The results of the investigation are summarized and presented as Plates 2 to 6.
Plate 2 represents the typical stratigraphy for the inta!<e structure area and Plate 3 shows a typical subsurface cross-section. The profiles show a succession of I
organic silty clay overlying silty clay, clayey sand and gravel, clayey sand, fine gravel and at an average elevation of +50 feet the top of the weathered Vincentown Sand.
The weathered Vincentown Sand which is the uppermost stratum in the Vincentown Formation has been described for the purposes of this report as a red-brown, with a trace of green, fine to medium, clayey and/or silty glauconitic sand.
The weathered zone was observed to be between 22 and 26.5 feet thick. It is characterized by the presence of oxidation and/or a red / yellow coloring to the mineral grains of the sand. The top of the unweathered (unoxidized) Vincentown Sand was observed at elevations ranging from +22.5 to +29 and is depicted on the contour map " Top of Unweathered (unoxidized) Vincentown Formation", Plate 4.
I Plate 5 presents a summary of standard penetration resistance (N-value) against elevation for Boreholes V1 to VS. The plate shows quite clearly two distinct o

2 Dames & fAoore
domains. Soils above elevation +44 being loose to medium dense and below elevation
+44 dense becoming very dense with depth.
Plate 6 presents standard penetration resistance (N-value) against eleva-tion for Boreholes B1 to 88 along with N-values from boreheles 21-24 dril'ed for the original investigation for the intake structure. The plate indicates similarity with a spread of values in the range medium dense to very dense. Blow counts generally increase with depth.
I
1.4 CONCLUSION
S Based upon this investigation the following conclusions were reached concerning the soils encountred in the vicinity of the intake structure:
a.
The elevation of the top of the unweathered (unoxidized) Vincentown Sand ranged between elevations +22.5 to +29.
I b.
The top of the Vincentown Formation ranged between elevations '49 to
+51.
c.
A transition zone between unweathered and completely weathered Vincen-town Sar.d tists, and is several feet thick.
d.
A loose to medium dense zone was encountered above elevation +44. The i
loose material was up to 4.5 feet thick and found at elevations ranging between +44 and +54.
