Maritime Administration A two man health physics team from Radiation Safety Services, Selwood, Inc.
performed the required Semi-annual Radiation Survey aboard the N/S SAVANNAH on Septeniber 21 & 22, 1981.
This radiation survey was conducted following the com-pletion of the refurbishing work done to the vessel prior to it being turned over to the S.C. Patriots Point Development Authority.
7 Maritime Administration representives present during the radiation survey were Mr. Charlie Claussen, Marine Surveyor and Mr. John Davis, MARAD Washington.
The N/S SAVANNAH was tied up in the Cooper River, starboard side to the U.S.
Army TC Dock at the Army Charleston Storage Activity off Remount Road in North Charleston, S.C.
Refurbishing work done on the ship was done at this same location.
This report covers inspection and survey findings as follows:
Routine Radiation Monitoring Stations Sheets B-01 thru B-09 Only two areas in the un-restricted or public areas showed elevated readings.
Those areas were identified as the area at Fire Station #31, Starboard side on "D" Dec.k and the "B" Deck level of Cargo Hold No. 4 above the Forward Control Space.
Primary Containment Vessel Sheet B-18 Primary Containment was not opened or entered.
The forward and aft' air lock hatches were inspected and were in place and secure as before.
Radiation readirgs were taken around both of these hatches (see Sheet B-ll).
Forward Control Area, Upper and Lower Compartments Sheet B-10 The forward Control Area was not entered by workers or personnel involved in the refurbishing of the ship.
The Cold Water Chem Lab on the port side and the Radiation Monitoring Room on the starboard side in the Upper Level were dry but dirty.
There was no evidence of leakage of liquids from any of the systems in these two compartments.

The Gas Adsorption Equipment Room on the port side and the Radiation Sampling Room on the starboard side in the lower Level were dry. There was no evidence of any leakage of liquids or fluids from any of the systems.
The Access Plugs to the Iower Secondary Containment of the Reactor Compartnent were in place as before.
Reactor Compartment _,_ Secondary Containment Sheets B-ll & B-12 The Reactor Compartment was not entered by workers or personnel involved in the refurbishing of the ship.
The Lower Secondary Containment level could not be inspected or surveyea on September 22nd due to the fact that no electrician was available to cut in the ventilation system prior to personnel entry.
The radiation survey conducted on July 8,1981 is included in this repoi t for record purposes.
Charge Pump Ro_ oms Sheet B-13

There was no evidence of any leakage from any of the pumps or systems.
Both compartments were dry.
Port Stabilizer Room Sheet B-14 There was no evidence of leakage of liquids or fluids 'from any of the valves, fil ters, pumps, flanges, or systems in this compartment. The compartment was dry.
Starboard Stabilizer Room There are no radioactive systems or reactor systeras in this compartment.
The compartment was dry, no evidence of leakage or flooding.
Ilot Chemistry, Laborat_ory, Sheet B-15 This compartment is dirty but dry.
Engine Room Space Sheet B-16 & U-17 Both the Upper and Lower Levels of the Engine Room Space are dirty much more so in the lower level where work was done cleaning the bildges.
Samples Co_11ected and Analysed Samples of shield tank water, bildge water & sludge, river water and bottom mud were collected and analysed.
Results of the radiological analysis are included in this report.

Radiation Safety Program During Refurbishing The purpose of the radiation safety program established during the refurbishing period aboard the 'l/S SAVAlitlAH was to assure that no workers or members of the public were exposed to any levels of ionizing radiation es a result of work con-ducted aboard the vessel; to monitor levels of radicattivity in work areas; and to survey and monitor all components, material, debris, etc. which'was remosed from the vessel.
There was no data to indicate that any worker or member of the public received any exposure to radiation over background.
There was no evidence that any compon-ents, material, scrap, or debris removed from the vessel contained or was contam-inated with radionuclides.
C0ilCLUSI0tlS The inspection and radiological survey team found no evidence to indicate any unusual radiation readings aboard the N/S SAVAtitlAH. There was no indication that any radionuclides have migrated from any of the controlled areas into any unrestric-ted areas. There is no evidence to indicate that the vessel has had any radiological impact to the environment or that it has presented any radiological hazard to the general public.
i There is no reason, from the health physics stand-point, that the SAVANNAH cannot be moved to Patriots Point Development Authority within the next month.
